In a bid to ward off the arrival of a new wave of generics, the Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday released an advisory in June of the potential use of Viagra to treat erectile dysfunction.
The agency said its recommendations were based on studies in 50,000 men who received Viagra during the past four years, but the number is projected to double to more than 50,000 by 2025, putting the drug in the category of non-prescription drugs.
Viagra is the latest in a long list of drugs to come onto the market, with some of them being over-the-counter, but the drugs currently on the market are not regulated.
The drug, which is made by Pfizer Inc., has a reputation for being highly effective in treating erectile dysfunction, but in some cases, it has a weak efficacy.
Viagra's patent has expired and its patent has not yet expired in the United States. The FDA is now working on new drugs that are potentially better for patients than Viagra, including treatments for depression and anxiety.
Viagra and its generic versions have a much higher success rate, and its success rate is higher than that of the branded version. But it's not clear how much of the drug the drug is doing. That could affect how it is distributed, given that a few of its patents are in the United States.
The FDA is also considering other uses for Viagra and the possibility of other drugs to treat ED.
The drug was approved in the United States in 1996, and was used to treat the symptoms of pulmonary hypertension in 1998, and to treat heart disease in 2002. In 2004, it was approved for the treatment of diabetes, which is a type of diabetes that affects about 1 in 6 American adults. But it is also used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia in men.
Viagra's manufacturer, Pfizer Inc., has also been in the market since 1996. Pfizer had been developing Viagra for over a year.
In a statement to CBS, Pfizer Inc. said it has had discussions with the FDA on the drug's potential uses for the medication.
In its statement, Pfizer said it had found the potential benefits of Viagra to be outweighed by the potential risks of side effects.
Pfizer Inc. said it was working with the FDA to review the drug's potential risks and that it expected the drug to be approved in a few years.
The company has a long history of treating sexual dysfunction, with its Viagra in 1998 being the only FDA approved medication to treat the condition.
Viagra was approved by the FDA in 1996, and was used to treat the symptoms of pulmonary hypertension in 1998, and to treat heart disease in 2002.
In 2004, Pfizer Inc. and its generic competitor, Cialis, had a partnership that was designed to help lower the risk of cardiovascular events.
A 2003 analysis in the New England Journal of Medicine found that Viagra had an efficacy rate of about 20% to 25%, but it had a high failure rate of about 10%.
In 2006, the FDA approved Viagra for the treatment of ED, although it did not have a clear benefit to patients with ED.
The FDA has also studied the drug for possible use in children and adolescents as well as in adults with impotence.
The company noted in a statement that the study involved 18,000 men and did not include the data from patients with impotence.
The FDA said it was considering new uses for the drug and is working on a new marketing plan.
The drug's maker, Pfizer, said in a statement that it has made "significant progress" and that it would be prepared to provide information in an effort to "continue the ongoing development of Viagra."
In a telephone interview, Pfizer Inc. and Cialis Inc. said they believe that it is important to continue to expand the market for the drugs and to seek FDA approval if they see an increased use of the drug, which is based on a clinical trial.Pfizer, Cialis, and Pfizer Inc. are not offering comment. Cialis Inc. does not comment on the FDA advisory.VIAGRA (generic version of Viagra) may be used to treat male impotence, but is not approved by the FDA for the condition it is intended to treat. VIAGRA does not treat erectile dysfunction.Sold and Supplied by Healthylife Pharmacy
